Happy Darwin Day!

February 12, 2009

Those of you who don’t work in the sciences (which is almost certainly most of you) may not know, but today is Darwin Day! It’s his 200th birthday, and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

Happy Birthday, Chuck!

To celebrate, grab your favorite science book and get reading! I really should take this as an excuse to re-start Voyage of the Beagle, which I started a few years ago, but stalled out and never finished. Well, it’ll happen sometime this year.

Happy Darwin Day – I don’t regularly work in the Sciences so that must be why I missed it. But yesterday, I subbed for 8th grade science. It was fun. AND, I am reading a science book (geeky me, tried to show the teacher I was subbing for – yep, she must have thought me quite the geek.) Mauve – Simon Garfield. very chemistry. and fashion!

Nymeth – I use the personalized Google homepage, so I never see the fancy logos unless I go looking for them… pretty!

Care – I’ve heard about Mauve – must have been when I was looking for more reading to follow up Colors: A Natural History of the Palette. Good to hear you’re enjoying it so far!

Happy Darwin Day to you as well…hard to believe there are still court cases about teaching Darwinism today. Its been 200 years people.

I’m a science geek, but I’d rather read fiction for fun. Maybe it’s time for some Asimov or Clarke rereads…

Serena – No kidding! And yet…

chartroose – There *is* some fun pop-sci out there, but I say sci-fi totally counts. :)

Happy Darwin Day! The science students at my school have a huge celebration planned for tomorrow. There’ll be feats of strength and agility, (presumably as a demonstration of natural selection), a beauty contest, (ditto), and – the icing on the cake – a Darwin costume contest.

Memory – Oh wow, that sounds like a ton of fun! My department doesn’t have anything that cool planned.

Ladytink – Heh, thanks! I think he looks a little more dour in the photo than he does in real life, but that’s probably just due to the angle I had to use with the laptop camera.

Rob – Brilliant! They are pretty agreeable little fellows, aren’t they?
