June 2014 Wrap-Up: Books and Reviews

July 1, 2014

Ye Grande Olde TBR(e) Challenge Update

I started June with 263 unread books sitting around my house. And I ended with … *drumroll* …239! Good job, self! I finally got up the guts to get rid of the giant stack o’ books that I had pulled for possible donation over a month ago – these were (mostly) books that I’d had for a long time (like seven to eight years or more) but had never made it off the shelf. Basically books that I once had an interest in reading but didn’t so much any more. And even though these were books that I was pretty sure I was okay getting rid of, I still had to be coaxed into actually making the donation by a friend, and then reward myself with ice cream afterwards.

On the reading front, June was okay. I spent a lot of the month sick, first with a cold and then with the Cough That Won’t Give Up. That should have translated into a lot of reading and in some ways it did, but it also made me crave comfort books, so I’ve been in a very re-read-y type mood lately. But I did read a couple of chunksters off the TBR pile, so that counting the donations, my TBR pile went down by more than 10,000 pages! Not too shabby.

…anyways, let’s take a look at the breakdown:

Neutral books – Read, but don’t affect the TBR pile

Audiobooks
Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

Read But Not Owned (Books)
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Read But Not Owned (Graphic Novels)
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1: Cosmic Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Angela by Brian Michael Bendis
Rust, Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field by Royden Lepp
Rust, Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell by Royden Lepp

Re-Reads
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold

Changes to the TBR pile

Read from my TBR pile (huzzah!)
The Quick by Lauren Owen
Firebirds Soaring ed. by Sharyn November
Warriors ed. by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois

Other removals from the TBR pile (um… huzzah?)
Ooooh, yes, 26 of them. I finally gathered my courage and took a big stack of books to the library booksale. Now my shelves look all empty! (Not really, of course. But comparatively!)

Added to my TBR pile (all-around shame!)
Wondrous Beginnings ed. by Steven H. Silver & Martin H. Greenberg Invisible Beasts by Sharona Muir
Tinkers by Paul Harding Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer

Non-TBR acquisitions (storage-space-related shame!)
Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay Me and My Little Brain by John D. Fitzgerald
The Great Brain at the Academy by John D. Fitzgerald The Return of the Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald

Kathy – Me too! I read them all a million times but never owned my own copies. I still remember exactly where in my library they were shelved, too.
