January 2014 Wrap-Up: Books and Reviews

February 1, 2014

Ye Grande Olde TBR(e) Challenge Update

I started January with 259 unread books sitting around my house. And I ended with … *drumroll* …263! Well, January was… not a bust, exactly, but not a banner reading month, either. Between getting the new semester off the ground, trying to get caught up after the holidays, and sticking a DNF and a re-read and a whole bunch of podcasts in the middle, my actual book tally is way lower than I’d prefer… almost as low as last January, when I at least had a cross-country move as an excuse.

…anyways, let’s take a look at the breakdown:

Neutral books – Read, but don’t affect the TBR pile

Audiobooks
Enchanted by Alethea Kontis

Read But Not Owned (Books)
Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest by Stephen E. Ambrose

Read But Not Owned (Graphic Novels)
Swallow Me Whole by Nate Powell

E-Books
Shadow Magic by Patricia C. Wrede*

Re-Reads
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Changes to the TBR pile

Read from my TBR pile (huzzah!)
The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett

Other removals from the TBR pile (um… huzzah?)
Possession by A. S. Byatt

Added to my TBR pile (all-around shame!)
Black Order by James Rollins The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies? by Jared Diamond
Hollow City by Ransom Riggs The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
The Half-Made World by Felix Gilman Broken Harbor by Tana French (not pictured because I totally forgot)

Non-TBR acquisitions (storage-space-related shame!)
Reckless by Cornelia Funke

Added to my eTBR pile (non-storage-space-related shame!)
Just Kids by Patti Smith * Pursuant to the discussion on this post, I’ve decided to create an eTBR pile for e-books for which I actually pay money. I’m not adding them into my total TBR numbers, but I have to fess up about them somewhere. Keeps me honest.

I haven’t read any James Rollins… I got this through LibraryThing’s Secret Santa program, so I have no idea what to expect.

If you like the sort of thing Dan Brown writes you should like James Rollins, I personally prefer Rollins. Look forward to seeing your review.

Kailana – Yeah, it’s a quasi-DNF. I’m counting it as off my TBR pile but I’m not getting rid of it in the thought that I might go back to it.

FWIW, I think at the right time you could love that story. Just love it. :)
