TSS: D-Day approaches…

June 27, 2010

The Sunday Salon.comHappy Sunday, all! Just a quick check from me this week:

D-Day is this week (finally)… the “D” standing for “Dissertation Defense”, of course. I’ve been on semi-vacation for the past two weeks, partly giving practice talks to various audiences, and partly taking it easy, spending time with family, etc. But now we’re down to it, and in only a few days, I’ll have to summarize the past [embarrassingly large number of] years of my life in a one-hour seminar.

I’m… not all that nervous, actually. And it’s making me nervous that I’m not more nervous. But rather than stressing out about it, I’ve been taking the weekend off, going to see “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” last night (really really good, a very nice job of adapting the book, and actually did a better job with the pacing than did the book), reading the new Naomi Novik book (which I haven’t gotten very far in, despite it being quite enjoyable; I totally fell asleep and took a nap yesterday while I meant to be reading it), and working on the roughly six gajillion book reviews which I am behind on.

So, I hope everyone else has a fun and exciting week ahead of them… and hopefully by the next Sunday Salon post I write, I will be requiring all commentors to address me as “Dr. Fyrefly.” (Okay, probably not the part about the comments. But still.)

Can we start calling you Dr. Fyrefly now, for practice? :P Best of luck with your defence! Not that you need it.

Good luck with your dissertation–I am impressed you’re so calm about it! I am glad to hear the film version of Tattoo was good because I definitely want to see it.

Good to see you know that it’s important to take a break and relax, in fact to make it part of your study process.

    Best of luck this week.

I’ll also be calling you Dr. Fyrefly a little early, if you don’t mind. :) You’ll do great! *waves pom-poms*

    Good luck!

I haven’t read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I did see the movie and agree that the pacing was excellent. They did such a good job of revealing details and surprises at exactly the right moment.
