Sunday Salon: Playing Catch-Up, and Moving Pictures
Oooof, it’s disgusting here. Going to be in the nineties with, like, 150% humidity. I went to the gym at 8:30 this morning and it was already gross out. Good thing that I can spend the rest of the day inside, writing reviews so that I will have something to post this week while I’m at a conference, and also so that I can stop feeling bad about having a review back-log that’s 6 (almost 7) deep. I’ve also got some work-work to do, so that I will have something to say during my presentation at the conference, and won’t just be standing there going “Science is neat! Any questions?”
I’m mostly moved and settled in; thanks to everyone for their patience over the past two weeks! I’m about 90% unpacked, I’d say – all that’s left is finishing putting away my desk stuff (I discovered that over the years I’ve accumulated six USB-to-mini-USB cables. Useful!) and hanging pictures. I didn’t take as many pictures during the moving process as I normally would have, but I do have a few before-and-after shots of my book cases.
Before (Okay, kind of During):
And then you add about ten or so (I never got an official count) boxes of these:
And then you get…
After:
The shelves on the shorter case rest on brackets, so they were able to be flipped over to hopefully counteract the curve. The taller case, however, is cheap and made of MDF, and the shelves have little notches that rest on pegs, so they didn’t get flipped. Let the curving begin! (Well, continue.)
LOOK at all your books! The moving guys must love you. or did you do it yourself?
(Let the curving begin – LOL!) It’s unbearably hot and humid here in Mpls, too.
No, we did it ourselves – well, plus the help of my parents and a cadre of very strong friends. I was careful to buy the *small* boxes for my books, though. :)
Funny you started your post with the hot weather. I did as well. Unlike you, I don’t find 150% humidity disgusting. I love it! The hotter, the better I think.
On a different note, I like how organized your bookshelves are. There was a time (so long ago, I can barely remember) when my shelves were in order. Now, not so much. The books are spilling on to the floor! Time to invest in more book shelves.
Shonda – I actually normally like high humidity… when it’s in the 80s. When it’s in the 90s and this humid, though, being outside feels like trying to breathe through an old shoe.
Also… BWAHAHAHAHA! Organized! That’s a good one. I don’t think anyone’s ever used that term in reference to my bookcases before. :)
Wow…look at that shelf. I have a teeny weeny shelf, I’m even ashamed to call it a shelf. I guess if I ever move, the only thing I would find interesting would be re-arranging my bookshelf, however small it might be.
Violet – Nothing saying you can’t re-arrange your bookshelf without moving! I do it all the time. :)
Sounds like you live near me…temps in the nineties and it’s always high humidity.
Good luck with the move. We will never move again. I read and my husband collects rocks. Need I say more?
debnance – my husband collects rocks.
Okay, that made me laugh out loud. :-D
Looking good! I hate when the bookshelves curl. I wish they would make them better, especially considering what they cost!
You know what’s weird? When I saw your post title I thought, “Who calls movies ‘moving pictures’ in this day and age?”
Then I remembered you’d recently moved, and I felt rather silly.
Memory : LOL! That’s so funny!
I love seeing other readers bookshelves and yours are no exception! Look at all these books, what a great view! :)
Another reader with bookcases full two books deep.
It’s been a while since I rearranged my books. May be a good project for Thanksgiving break.
Glad the move went well. I have got to get another bookcase! I have no idea what books are in the stacks lying all over the house.
Have a great conference!
The bookshelves look great! And we collect books AND rocks TOO! For our last move, we had boxes of both! Kind of embarrassing – boxes of rocks….
I don’t think you have enough shelves though
I get the itch to move every few years, but it sure is a lot of work! Glad to see you’re almost completely moved in.
When’s the conference? That would probably be the sum total of my presentation. What more is there to be said?
My shelves are sort of organized but I need to put more into a space that has no more room. I see rearranging in my future. Also another shelf.
