Lightning Never Strikes Twi…. Oh wait.

May 14, 2009

Just a quick note – My internet access may be somewhat spotty over the next few days/week.
lightning
As near as I can tell, lightning hit the cable box during a big storm last night, and basically traveled through the cable wires and fried everything attached to one (namely, the wireless router and the TV.) Even when the internet is down, there are still blinking lights on the wireless hub, but not today… and I can’t get the TV to turn on at all. I have to do some more investigating (and possibly some yelling at customer service over the phone) when I get home, but I think that’s what happened. Turns out surge protectors are not so useful when the wires in question bypass them entirely. At least the internet was plugged into a (relatively) cheap wireless hub, and not, say, directly into my computer. *shudder*

Anyhow, while this means several things, none of them particularly pleasant, most relevant to this blog is that I’m going to be slower than normal about things like moderating and responding to comments, etc., and my posting is going to be somewhat sporadic. I can write posts off-line and upload them when I’m at work, but if you don’t see me around your blogs, or even much around here, for the next week or so, that’s why. Hrmph.

    No. Fun.

I hope you can get it all resolved without having to spend a bunch of money/buy a lot of new stuff.

DoB – Well, I was vaguely in the market for a new TV anyways, if it comes to that, mostly because I was not looking forward to moving my current heavy monstrosity come August. However, if it really is fried inside, its resale value just plummeted. :)

I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m glad at least your computer is okay!

Where I live we rarely ever get lightning. Earthquakes and wildfires yes. Lightning no

    That stinks!

Oh, too bad. Lightning is more powerful than any old surge protector. Years ago, when I was pretending to be a redneck and living in the backwoods of Alabama, lightning struck my trailer and made my TV explode!

Oh, OUCH. I hope it’s just briefly inconvenient and not worse. No TV???? Perish the thought!

Urgh, that must be so frustrating! Thank goodness your computer didn’t fry like the TV did.

Nymeth – No kidding! I get sick to my stomach even thinking about it.

CB James – I think I’d prefer the lightning, thanks!

bermudaonion – Yeah, *and* it was so loud it woke me up! :)

chartroose – I’ve heard stories like that before, and that terrifies me… I can’t be in the same room as a TV during a lightning storm.

Carrie K – AND no internet, so not only did I miss Grey’s Anatomy last night, I can’t even watch it on my computer this weekend! :)

Memory – The cable guy is coming on Monday, although I’m not sure that the customer service rep entirely understood the problem. “Your internet is out?” “Yes, and the router’s dead, and I can’t get the TV to turn on.” “What about your cable? Are you getting cable service?” “Well, hard to say, seeing as how I can’t turn the TV on…”

Oh sorry to hear about the lightning – that really sucks :(
We get quite a few lightning storms during the warm months – the normal ones aren’t bad but when it starts chaining I hide from everything that’s plugged in. It scares the crap outta me!
