Sunday Salon: Home for the Holidays

December 21, 2008

The Sunday Salon.comLet the reading binge begin!

It’s been another slow, slow reading week for me – I finished two books, The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly, and Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle, but I felt like I didn’t have the time (or energy) to get the reading done that I wanted.

By Friday I’d finished up all of my school- and work- related end of the semester tasks, so I was planning to give myself the day off to polish off my home-related to-dos before taking off for the holidays. I had plenty of time, so I curled up in the lazyboy with a blanket and my book (currently The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon), intent on getting some quality reading done… and fell asleep before I’d read five pages, and stayed that way for the next three hours. A semester’s worth of sleep deprivation catching up with me, I guess, but yikes!

Consequently, I didn’t sleep well Friday night… which made my drive yesterday ever so much fun. I’d planned to polish off my audiobook (All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy) on the drive home, but as good as a narrator as Frank Muller is, his voice can be a little soporific, plus it was at exactly the right timbre to get drowned out by wind and wheel noise, no matter how loud I cranked my iPod. So, instead I put some music on, and sang myself hoarse (something I only do in the car when there’s no one to hear me) all the way here.

Today’s going to be good, though. I’ve got a good night’s sleep under my belt, and my only responsibilities are possibly some cookie-making and tree-decorating later on – plenty of time to read, or knit and listen to my audiobook (or both!) Or catch up on my Google Reader – I’ve been shamefully behind recently, so if you’ve made a brilliant post in the past week that you’ve been dying for me to see, don’t worry, I’ll get to it soon. ;)

I hope everyone has a Festive Solstice, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, or just a plain ol’ good week!

I can’t wait to read your review on The Shadow of the Wind. I have it on my bookshelf and have been dying to read it. Happy Holidays!

Vasilly – The review’s up now… I was able to park my butt in a chair for about three hours yesterday and plow through almost half the book. :)

So, I’m really really behind in blogging after taking off 2 weeks from my google reader, so I’m doing a lot of skimming and might have missed the actual review–but how was listening to All the Pretty Horses? I love McCarthy’s writing, but I’m interested in how well it lends itself to being read aloud.
