Book links around the web

December 13, 2008

A few quick book-related links ‘n’ such before I head out for a full day of work and cookie-making.

First, there’s a review of Twilight over on Diary of a Future Millionaire’s livejournal that almost made me bust a gut laughing. It’s probably not for you if you’re offended by swearing or sex, but if that stuff doesn’t bother you and your sense of humor is anything like mine, it’s a fun read.

Also on the subject of Twilight, I’m sure a lot of you have seen this already, but The Twilight Puppet Saga also amuses the heck out of me. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you can save yourselves the $9 – the puppet version is actually pretty true to the original:

Finally, in what I think is the most exciting news, the Fables series of graphic novels is being turned into a miniseries for ABC. I’m torn between being excited by the possibility that it will be awesome, and worry that they’re going to royally screw it up. They haven’t started casting at all yet, although Pajiba’s speculation of David Boreanz for Bigby is an interesting one. I’ve been watching the first season of Angel recently, and I can kind of see it, although he doesn’t seem quite… hirsute enough. Then again, the same Hugh Jackman who nancied his way around Kate and Leopold also plays the perfect Wolverine, so I suppose anything’s possible.

What about you, readers? Who would you cast as Bigby? Snow White? Goldilocks? (Probably due to all of my recent Joss Whedon watching, but I think Sarah Michelle Gellar would be hilariously perfect as a heavy artillery-toting communist commando Goldilocks.)

OMG, Twilight erotica! That was hysterical!

lol! The Twilight review completely cracked me up.

I feel the same about the Fables miniseries. It could be awesome, but it could also go so horribly wrong. No idea about casting, though. I’m bad at that sort of thing :P

softdrink – The first time I read it, I mostly had my laughter under control… until I saw the title of the first comment (“Taste the Rainbow”), and then I just lost it.

Nymeth – I’m terrible at casting, too – I think because I don’t normally fill in the full face of characters in my head when I’m reading (although that’s not really an issue with Fables.) I’m much better at picking apart other people’s casting choices. :)

    That puppet Twilight was great!

I feel much the same as you re: the whole Fables on ABC thing. I think it could be fantastic, but it would be oh-so easy for them to muck it up.

Great Twilight stuff… even if Rudoph got eaten. I’ll admit to being worried about the Fables thing too. It sounds like an interesting concept but pulling it off could be very tough.

    I’m missing Blood Ties… and True Blood… :(

Twilight Puppet Saga is amazing! And as for the Fables news, well, I am somewhat worried about what they’ll do to it. I think David Boreanz is too young and pretty for Bigby. Maybe if they scarred his face up with makeup or something…I think Sarah Michelle would make an interesting Rose – she definitely has the sarcasm down. :)

Memory – I’m particularly worried about the non-human Fables… TV miniseries don’t always have the best CGI budgets, so things could get pretty silly-looking pretty fast.

Jen – We don’t have cable, so I haven’t seen True Blood… which I think is probably for the best as far as my free time’s concerned! :)

Jessi – It’s true, Boreanz isn’t quite grizzled enough in his natural state. I hadn’t even thought about Rose Red… I’m much better at coming up with actors and picking which part they’d be best for, vs. thinking of parts and trying to come up with the perfect actor.

I think the special effects in the puppet show are better than the movie! he he

While I’ve read all the books in the Twilight series, I find the links you mentioned totally, absolutely, completely hilarious! More link! More links!

On Fables, I’m a bit doubtful of the miniseries. While I love the graphic novels themselves, transferring it to a small screen might prove difficult. As you pointed out budget is an issue. Plus, the actual writing and whether or not it would branch out to other stories altogether.

And while I love David Boreanaz to bits (I’m a BTVS and Angel fanatic, or more like I treat Joss Whedon as a god) I think he’s far too busy with Bones to be considered for the series. Then again, I’ve no idea if Bones is canceled already.

Stephanie – The flying through the forest certainly looked about as realistic as it did in the movie – not to mention the sparkling!

Lightheaded – I don’t normally post links, because I don’t normally have links to post that I didn’t find on someone else’s book blog! I’ve got non-blogging friends who have had to listen to me rant about Twilight many times, though, and they passed those two along.

Thanks for a great laugh this afternoon! It’s been quite a weekend; my son broke his arm sledding and I’m wondering WHEN I’m going to finish Christmas prep (and how did I get so far behind?!?). The Twilight stuff is great!

Dawn – Oh no, I hope the little man’s okay, and heals quickly! I’m glad I could spread a little laughter.
