Character Crushes and a Giveaway!
After reading Austenland, in which the main character is hampered in her real-life relationships because of her infatuation with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, I got thinking about my own character crushes.
Unlike the heroine of Austenland, none of these have become crippling obsessions for me, or interfered with my real-life relationships. They’re just crushes, and yes, I’m totally aware they’re fictional. Still, if I were able to crawl inside books, all of these guys would totally be my boyfriend. :)
1) Peter Pan. My first crush. Technically not a book crush, since I was mostly familiar with the musical, but even at the tender age of three I knew I’d be a better match for Peter than Wendy, who can be a bit of a wet rag.
2) Nat Eaton from The Witch of Blackbird Pond. He saves Kit when no one else will help her, and he knows his way around boats. What’s not to like?
3) Will from the His Dark Materials trilogy. Maybe it’s just because the guy who narrates his parts on the audiobook is an incredibly affecting actor, but I completely fell in love with Will almost from his first chapter.
4) Prince Caspian from the Narnia series, but mostly from Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Another boy on a boat. Huh. I was happy enough with the choice of Ben Barnes to play Caspian in the recent movie (although I hated that they made him affect that phony Spanish accent), even though I’d always thought of Caspian as blonde.
5) Calvin O’Keefe from A Wrinkle in Time and Charles Wallace Murray from A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L’Engle. Some of my favorite books as a kid; I read these so often that I couldn’t help but develop a crush on the guys.
6) Will Stanton from The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. He’s awesome, immortal, and saves the world from the powers of The Dark. I refuse to watch the recent movie version as a matter of principle – Will Stanton is NOT American.
7) Little Ricky from Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver. He’s a minor character, and he smokes, but he’s so charming and endearing, plus he spends an entire afternoon helping Lusa sit on goats.
8) Ragnarok from Fool on the Hill by Matt Ruff. Completely antithetical to my normal type, he’s the tortured, black-wearing, motorcycle-riding anti-hero, but I still think he’s awesome.
9) Marius from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. So what if he’s just a leeeetle bit older than me? (and undead.)
10) Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter books. Everyone always picks Sirius, or Snape, or Harry, or Draco, or Ron, but not me. The end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix made me cry, but for Lupin’s sake, not Harry’s.
11) Jesse from the Mediator series by Meg Cabot. Seriously, where was the hot dead cowboy haunting my bedroom when I was a teenager?
Okay, that was a long and somewhat embarassing list. I could probably come up with more if I tried, but I won’t. Instead, now it’s your turn!

5) Open to anyone with a mailing address worldwide, although I make no guarantees on shipping speed for anyone outside of the US or Canada.
Rhys from The Two Princesses of Bamarre, by Gail Carson Levine. I could NOT get over him! Like you said, they are absolutely fictional. But we can dream, can’t we?
I get character crushes all the time but it’s been awhile since I was obsessive about a character lol. I think the last one was Jaime from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series but only for the first two books. Before that it was Anne Rice’s Lestat (even though I did like Marius too).

I have to agree with Nat and Calvin!
What a cool comment idea. I have to say I had a HUGE crush on both Bastian and Atreyu from The Neverending Story when I was little. Sigh. I of course had a ton more but that’s the one that popped into my head. Thanks!
Wow! I haven’t had a crush in a book for so long. I guess the recent one I had was the prince in The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale :P Thanks!
My most recent crush is Doon from The City of Ember series. He stood up to the mayor on Assignment Day, didn’t mind getting his hands dirty exploring the Pipeworks, and even saved Torren from a burning tree. What a guy.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who has crushes on fictional characters! My biggest crush isn’t a book crush; it’s Newkirk from the show “Hogan’s Heroes.” LOL But for a book crush, I’d have to say Calder from Pemberley By the Sea, which I read recently.
Okay, other than the obvious Mr. Darcy and Gilbert Blythe, my biggest book crush is probably Frank Doel from 84, Charing Cross Road. Is that weird? Probably. Can’t help it though.
Great giveaway! thebluestockingsociety AT gmail
I’m so with you on Will from HDM. And I can’t wait to meet Will Stanton now!
Marius is also an excellent choice, but “my” Anne Rice vampire has always been Armand. I still have a bit of a crush on him.
Even though she’s a girl, Death from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. She’s just impossible not to love.
Amanda reminded me that 10-year-old me had a crush on Atreyu too. But the movie version of him, because I only read the book for the first time a couple of years ago.
I’m always falling in love with fictional characters. It’s quite a problem! LOL
I love this book called Wake and Cabel is just lovely.
In the Harry Potter books…I love Remus too, but I always had this thing for Draco. He’s so awful, but hilarious in a way…and I felt really bad for him too.

no need to enter me, but I wanted to compliment you on a unique post! Great idea.

Fred and George Weasley from Harry Potter! Because funny = hot
I’m always rather ashamed of the fictional guys I crush on, to the point where I refer to them as EFCCs. (Embarrassing Fictional Character Crushes). I haven’t had many of them over the years, but when I fall I fall hard.
My big one was always Taran from the Chronicles of Prydain. I fell for him when I was when ten… and eleven… and twelve… and, um, various other ages. Jody Lee’s gorgeous cover art didn’t hurt, either. My best friend and I used to prop up my copy of TARAN WANDERER and just stare at it for ages. (You see why he’s an EFCC?)
Others included Gilbert Blythe from the Anne of Green Gables series, (when I was eight), and Drizzt Do’Urden from the Dark Elf Trilogy, (when I was twelve).

Cool question, I find that I am drawn to many characters when reading in that book crush way.
The main one that came to mind was Iago – the tortured soul thing got me.
I really liked David from Uglies – revolutionary outcast.
Seth from Wicked Lovely – loved his fierce protectiveness.
And most recently Bigby from Fables – the big bad wolf!
Ok while my fav. character crush is always going to be Zadist from JR Ward’s BDB, but right now I’m reading Dawn Thompson’s Lord of the Dark and I am sooo in love with Gideon! The fallen, winged arch angel! LOVE IT!

Nicki, no need to enter me in the giveaway but I just had to say that I loved Ricky from Prodigal Summer too!
Adam Dalgliesh, protagonist of at least 14 of P.D. James’ works.
I’ve always had a rather embarrassing crush on Christopher Chant from the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones. Show me a man who loves to wear colorful clothing and I’ll show you my undying affection.

Hmm, I’m rather fond of Jason Bourne from Robert Ludlum’s original trilogy (not the later books or movies based on them though). I’m sure I’ve had others, but that’s the book that caught my eye when I went up to look at my bookcase.
Atticus Finch, and, to a lesser extent, Boo Radley.
Well, I have a terrible crush on Mr. Darcy, of course, especially when I’m visualizing him in the form of Colin Firth. But, one that’s off the wall — the doctor in The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier. He was one of those kind, sensitive doctors who asked the hero how he felt and obviously cared. In general, what you want in a guy — intelligent and empathic.
The most recent “book crush” I’ve had has been on Henry DeTamble from Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife. What an amazing love story :)
Thanks for the giveaway!
Call me crazy, but I only seem to have crushes on the bad boys of literature. First and always – Rhett Butler. I hate to say it, but I would leave my perfectly loving and warm husband for him. No questions asked. Although I’ve yet to finish Anna Karenina, Vronsky has my heart. Charles Radclyffe from Devil Water. And, I guess most obviously over the past year and a half – Henry VIII. I just can’t help myself. ;)
The ones I remember most are the firsts: Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables, Laurie from Little Women.
Later on: Mr. Darcy from P&P, Edmund from Mansfield Park
Great idea for a giveaway!
I too liked Gilbert Blythe – he was the first character that came to mind (and the guy who played him in the movie wasn’t that bad looking either).
Choosing one from books that I’ve read as an adult, I would have to say Jaime from the Outlander series.
A couple of my fictional crushes have been Mat Cauthon from The Wheel of Time series and Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower. I also totally agree with Judy’s comment about the Weasley twins.
What a fun post! I have a Remus Lupin crush too! lol…I thought I was the only one.
I’ll be blogging about my crushes soon :)
I have a crush on Edward Cullen of Twilight. :D I can’t wait for the movie
I will completely second
Roland Deschain from The Dark Tower series. He is easily far and away my biggest book crush ever. I also loved Jake (really all the characters in the series) but in a mom-son type way. My most recent deep crush is morpheus aka The Sandman from Neil Gaiman’s fantastic series. swoon
Henry from the Time Traveler’s wife was awesome as well…
Japhrimel from Lilith Saintcrow’s Dante Valentin e series is another book love of mine :)
oh, god. it’s been years and i doubt you’ll ever see this. but i have to say how much i love your book boyfriends list. seriously. i should do a list like this sometime, i’m pretty sure most of yours would end up on mine. i love that you have nat on it. i remember falling in love with witch of blackbird pond because of nat and kit’s interactions and just loving nat in general. and calvin. just calvin. i loved how he saw the real meg. (though adam’s still a little ahead of him in my own book boyfriends–er crushes–list). will isn’t in my list mostly because he’s the type i’d rather have as a friend, bran tickles my fancy more. and i was soo disappointed in the movie. i never even watched it, just read the reviews and felt like killing the makers. eugenides from megan whalen turner’s queen’s thief series would also be definitely in my list. definitely.
