Back from Vacation

July 16, 2008

So, after a week and a half of vacation to Canada, I’ve made it back home with no casualties, about a bazillion pictures, but sadly not very many books read.

Your trusty book blogger at the top of a mountain.

That's yours truly, standing near the Burgess Shale, which is about as close to a pilgrimage site as us evolutionary-biologist-types get, besides maybe the Galapagos or Darwin's home. And yes, that is 2-3 inches of snow on the ground in the middle of July. Not pictured: my totally non-waterproof hiking boots.

But, to my delight, I came home to four new books!
Dies the Fire by S. M. Stirling, which I will be reviewing for SF Site
Sunshine by Robin McKinley
The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton
The Mismeasure of Man by Stephen Jay Gould

We’ll just not mention that I’m not supposed to be acquiring any more books (for Ye Grande Olde TBR(e) Challenge), and that I’m certainly not currently reading at a faster rate than I’m acquiring. Shhhh. No one saw that.

I’ve spent the afternoon unpacking, starting loads of laundry and then forgetting about them for a few hours, and catching up on all of the book blogs I missed while I was away… man y’all are productive readers (and bloggers!). I had a fun time away, but it’s also nice to be back in the land of reliable internet service and my comfy reading chair.

I honestly HATE the cold and winter but with how hot it has been here lately that snow is looking mighty inviting! I’m glad you had a great time!

I know, it’s been in the 90s for the past few days here – hard to believe that a week ago I was uncomfortable because I didn’t have my mittens!

It looks beautiful! And to think, I was sweating here while you were throwing snowballs there!

BTW, I nominated your blog for an award:

No snowballs for me! I’ve got terrible circulation and my hands were already freezing from the wind. Plus, I didn’t know anyone else on the hike well enough to throw a snowball at them. :)

Thanks also for the award! That made my afternoon a lot better!

    Wow, that’s one “cool” photo!
