Sunday Salon: Spring Break Woo!

Well, sort of. Grad students don’t really get things like “holidays” or “time off” (at least not without accompanying piles of guilt), but a few days with no classes is as good of an excuse to get away as any.
The weather, if not exactly tropical, was at least sunny and cooperative. Plus it was a chance to take a friend who’d never been to the city to all of the touristy attractions, including the dyeing of the river for St. Patrick’s Day. (We couldn’t get close enough to the parade route to see much of it.)
This weekend, after a brief return to work, has been full of sci-fi movie and TV watching. I came out of the Battlestar Galactica series finale on Friday night mostly satisfied (and crying like a little girl, oh my goodness). It wasn’t perfect, and there were some elements I didn’t get/didn’t care for, but on the whole I thought it did a nice job of tying things together and wrapping them up without spending the whole two hours banging out answer after answer. Yesterday I watched two books-to-movies, Watchmen and The Thief Lord. I’ll post about my thoughts, although I think I’m going to wait until after I’ve watched Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which is at the top of my Netflix queue.
Unfortunately, all of the travel and fun has meant my reading’s suffered, and so has my blog reading and posting. Part of that is due to my current book (The Blackest Bird by Joel Rose), which I am not in love with and am having a hard time getting in the mood to make any progress on, but which was on my wishlist for so long, and which I actually bought new (very rare), that I’m having a hard time just giving up on it. Hrmph.

So glad you had a good time.
I really need to start watching BSG.
Oh yes I never did have a break while studying, well except for the summers, and that was fun :D
Give up on it. You can resell it somewhere and recoup part of the expense and relieve the guilt. Give up on it.
Sounds like fun! I did no homework for all of break, which I am starting to regret now that it’s Sunday and I’m staring at my list of things to do this week. Oh well :)
I’m looking forward to your book/movie Watchmen post; I’m still trying to decide what I thought of everything.
They dye the river??? That must take a whole lot of dye!
I really need to see if my library has BSG. I’ve heard so many good things about it over the years, and I need a new series to obsess over.
bermudaonion – Thanks! It was nice to get away for a bit.
blodeuedd – You definitely should start watching BSG! …of course, I think everyone should start watching BSG. :)
Debbie – I know, I should, but I can’t quite muster myself to do it.
Kim – I’m past the homework stage, but I did very little work towards my dissertation… that starts again tomorrow. *sigh*
Memory – Oh yes they do, and oh yes it does. We were there pretty early this year, before the dye had fully spread out, but it goes from its normal river-water-green to GREEN. Here’s a picture from 2006.
Oh, and you should definitely see if you can get your hands on the BSG dvds. It’s absolutely obsess-worthy.
sounds like a great time, and is that water green!
It’s nice to have a vacation every now and then. Though re-entry really stinks. Glad you had a good time.
This is a great photo! The sky is as blue as possible, and, yes, I can see the green river (wow!).
We lived in Syracuse for 5 years, and one bar in town made a big deal about the “green beer delivery” the weekend before St. Pat’s. They had a mocked-up tanker drive up to the building and “pump green beer” into all the taps. Fun stuff :)
Glad you enjoyed the break, as much as you could!
Serena – I always wonder about the ducks and geese and seagulls that are sitting in the river – do their feathers get stained?
Anna – Yeah, how come we don’t get vacations to recuperate from our vacations?!
Dawn – I didn’t actually get any green beer this year. Sad!
